Celebrating 40 Years of Service supporting our local community

Message from our President

In this increasingly digital world, thank you for visiting our website. We are thrilled to welcome you to the Junior League of Greater Winter Haven (JLGWH). If you are new to our organization, please explore our site to find out more about us. If you have worked with us before, stay tuned to see what we have planned for the 2020-2021 year.

Our mission statement explains not only what we do, but why we do it: The JLGWH is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. We welcome all women who value our mission. We are committed to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organizations and communities.

Our impact can be measured through the 1,100+ hours of volunteer work we log annually, as well as, the training we have planned for members in the year ahead. We hope JLGWH will be a meaningful source of professional development for our members as well as a strong source of trained volunteers within our community.

I am excited to share the latest on our members, our focus area, and our impact in the community. As we respond to COVID-19, more than ever before, our region needs trained volunteers to maintain important programs serving youth and women in need. Our League is well-equipped to fulfill this need.

Our League chapter has served the Greater Winter Haven area for 40 years. Throughout the years, we have remained true to our mission while continually revisiting our service projects to meet the changing needs of our membership and our community.

Our members are highly accomplished women, representing all the major industries in the area: education, healthcare, real estate, law, government, tourism and many more. We are leaders in the community and in our professional fields. We sit on the boards of non-profit organizations and volunteer outside of the League. Many members attribute their training in the League for developing the leadership skills they used in gaining promotions. It is our hope they will continue to use these skills for the rest of their lives. As we face the global pandemic together here in the Greater Winter Haven community, our members are a source of strength and creativity as we plan a path forward.

Our current community platform focuses on issues related to health, hunger, poverty and education in the Greater Winter Haven service area, with a focus on youth and women. We effect change through three types of service:

1. Direct service programs we develop and manage: Kids in the Kitchen, Stork Pile and our Mobile Food Pantry.

2. We seek community partnerships with other community organizations that align with our mission and focus area.

3. Financial support to education through Teacher Mini-Grants and Silver Tassels scholarships.

We enter into formal, multi-year programming so we can have structured, long-term impact over time. We are transitioning to reevaluate these partnerships each year to ensure we’re staying on top of the biggest needs in our area and can mobilize quickly to meet them.

We pivoted to drive-through Mobile Food Pantries, Zoom meetings and online content for the community during the height of the pandemic. Through it all, our members were and continue to be creative as well as dedicated to serving our community.

As part of the Association of Junior Leagues International, we join over 125,000 women across four countries who are passionate about the shared mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Through our local League chapter as well as AJLI, we are committed to developing the potential of women through civic leadership training that can be used to succeed in the League and to succeed in work and life.

This year, we will provide direct service to the community through increasing our Mobile Food Pantries within the community, providing new content to our Kids in the Kitchen Programthrough the re-branded Kids in the Kitchen + Beyond, and serving through Project Stork Pile.

Whether a prospective partner, member, or friend, we hope you can experience the JLGWH in action!

Thank you,

Elizabeth “Lisa” Davis

JLGWH President
